Your daily health habits, from smoothie ingredients to sleep routines, may be quietly working against you. From bananas blocking nutrient absorption to unsafe sunscreens, overlooked cancer screenings, early dementia warning signs, and the gut-sleep connection, small choices can make a big impact and Sperity is here to help you make smarter ones.

  1. Bananas in Your Smoothie? Science Says: Stop Immediately
Who knew that bananas in your smoothie could decrease nutrient absorption by 80%?!

  • Bananas can block the benefits: Putting a banana in your smoothie might sound healthy, but it can actually block your body from absorbing up to 84% of the good stuff—specifically flavanols, which support heart and brain health as you age.

  • Flavanols = aging support: Flavanol-rich fruits like berries have been shown to help reduce frailty and support mental well-being, especially as we get older.

  • Better berry choices: If you're going for a health boost, skip the banana and blend your berries with low-interference ingredients like pineapple, mango, oranges, or yogurt to get the most out of your smoothie.

  1. Only one quarter of sunscreens on store shelves are safe and effective, new report says
With summer starting soon, it matters which sunscreen you choose to protect your family.

  • Only 1 in 4 sunscreens truly protect you: A new report found that just 25% of sunscreens on U.S. shelves offer safe and effective protection—most fail to block both UVA and UVB rays or contain questionable ingredients.

  • Mineral sunscreens are the safer choice: Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide—they sit on your skin (not in your bloodstream), work immediately, and are safer for you and marine life. Chemical sunscreens can absorb into your body and have been linked to hormone disruption and environmental damage.

  • Don’t fall for high SPF or spray hype: SPF over 60 is mostly marketing fluff, and spray sunscreens may miss your skin or end up in your lungs, especially in windy conditions. Stick to lotions for even, safe coverage.

  1. Joe Biden Had Unrivaled Medical Care. How Did His Cancer Go Undetected?
In 2025, there are too many preventative tests available for this story to ever happen, especially to our former President.

  • Biden’s prostate cancer was diagnosed late, despite his access to excellent medical care, because routine PSA screening isn’t typically recommended after age 70. Current guidelines aim to avoid overdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment of slow-growing cancers in older men.

  • His last known screening was in 2014, and by the time symptoms appeared, the cancer had already spread to his bones. Although his type is aggressive, doctors say newer hormone therapies may help manage the disease—even if it’s not curable.

  • The case has reignited debate about screening standards for older men and public figures, with critics questioning whether more frequent PSA testing might have caught the cancer earlier—and if transparency around presidential health should be more standardized.

  1. Too young for dementia? These are the six warning signs for people under 65
Dementia is an increasingly-preventable disease, but it requires a concerted effort. Sperity Health is happy to be your longevity quarterback.

  • Early onset dementia is increasing, especially among those under 65, with nearly 80,000 people in the UK diagnosed. Unlike traditional dementia, it often starts with unexpected symptoms—not just memory loss, but changes in vision, behavior, and speech.

  • Six surprising early signs include: trouble with vision (not caused by eye issues), noticeable personality changes, difficulty finding words, getting lost in unfamiliar places, struggling to learn new things, and forgetting names or conversations more often than usual.

  • Getting diagnosed early helps. While there’s no cure, recognizing symptoms and connecting with specialists, support groups, and therapies can make life more manageable—for both individuals and their families.

  1. Want to Sleep Better? Pay Attention to Your Gut
Your Sperity Whoop band will reward you with a better sleep score if you can learn more about the Gut to Brain axis.

  • Poor sleep throws your gut out of balance. Skimping on rest can disrupt your microbiome, leading to cravings, blood sugar spikes, and even higher risks of weight gain and chronic disease. Your gut and sleep cycles are deeply connected—and when one’s off, the other suffers.

  • What and when you eat matters. Fiber-rich plants, whole grains, and tryptophan-packed foods (like seeds, lentils, and bananas) help your body produce melatonin and serotonin—two key sleep hormones. Eating late, however, can interfere with digestion and sleep quality.

  • Your habits set the rhythm. Consistent bedtimes, early dinners, sun exposure, and regular movement all support a healthy gut-sleep connection. Even screen time and jet lag can impact your internal clock. Small shifts in routine can lead to big improvements in how you sleep—and feel.
